Great Yarmouth Town's interim chairman Len Beresford has revealed why he decided to sack the club's manager.

Mike Derbyshire was axed via e-mail on Monday by the Bloaters' former secretary, who replaced Colin Jones at the helm in August. It was a move that shocked many but Beresford insists he made the call for the good of those involved with the Thurlow Nunn First Division club.

The Town chief said: 'There is never a right time to change a manager and at our level it is never an easy decision.

'A lot of people may disagree with the decision but on the other hand a lot of people will think it is right. As Mike himself put it in his piece in Grassroots Today; 'They have not got rid of me for football reasons'.

'Without wanting to sound military minded, in every organisation there is a chain of command, if there is a break in that chain it will inevitably lead to the untenable situation that I found myself in.

'Everybody who knows me knows that I have only got the best interests of the club at heart and that every decision made is what I believe is for the good of the club.

'The world of football will continue and I am a firm believer that today's headlines are tomorrow's chip paper, and at Great Yarmouth Town we must now look forward to the future and all do our best to claim a promotion place at the end of the season.'

Derbyshire has admitted he had a 'frank, yet, brief, exchange of views' with Beresford regarding the treatment of sponsors before he was shown the exit door. The 46-year-old took over the seaside outfit in September 2011 and oversaw one of the most turbulent periods in Town's 117-year history. He stuck by the club during a first season which saw them nearly go out of business, fail to fulfil a fixture, and get relegated.

Beresford also said: 'I would like to begin by thanking Mike for his efforts in helping to get the club back into the more stable position that it is now in.'

Yarmouth are just five points off the promotion places. Reserve team manager Lee Hackleton has been appointed caretaker until the end of the season and will take the Bloaters to Stowmarket in Saturday's First Division KO Cup quarter-finals.
