President David Wickerson has doubled his workload at Swaffham by becoming the club's temporary chairman.

The Greene King Eastern Counties Division One strugglers were late last month when Ian Milligan called time on his third season at the helm. Committee members met on Monday to discuss the man known as Spike's resignation – described as sudden and surprising by a club statement – and decided that Wickerson was the best man to currently fill the vacant position.

'After a great deal of discussion and careful consideration it was decided by an overwhelming majority vote that David Wickerson will stand on a short-term basis with immediate effect until the club's AGM in June,' said a Swaffham spokesman.

'With a full complement of volunteers already helping to organise the various sections within the club it was felt unnecessary to rush into any snap decisions at a time when stability is required to see the club through to the end of the season.

'David has only recently taken on the mantle of president and is in a good position to take a look at the running of the club with a fresh pair of eyes and without any preconceived ideas. Although the first XV have been struggling this season in EC One all other playing sections within the club remain strong.

'In particular the second team are currently sitting top of EC Four and are already virtually guaranteed promotion. The mini and youth sections have also shown great progress throughout this season.'

Swaffham's senior team – 13 points from safety with just six matches left – return to action after a weekend off when they visit Wisbech. The Fenlanders are only one of three sides Swaffham have beaten in the league this season but have collected 25 more points and occupy eighth. Wisbech also reached the south-east section semi-final of the prestigious Junior Vase but lost 20-7 at home to holders Battersea Ironsides at the weekend.

Coach Leonard Veenendaal said: 'I love the game but sometimes it does not love you back. Man for man every Wisbech player did their club and town proud.

'Each and every one put their bodies on the line and they all played with such heart and passion. I am immensely proud of the boys and wish Ironsides all the best for the final and the rest of their season.'
