Jessica-Jane Applegate heads into the IPC Swimming World Championships as the one to beat, but the Great Yarmouth ace insists she isn't about to get caught up in the hunt for medals.

Applegate has long been one to watch in world swimming, winning 200m freestyle gold at London 2012 and going on to win six European and World Championship medals since.

And in February this year she added another notch to her belt as she became the S14 100m butterfly world-record holder as she touched home in 1:08.13 minutes.

All this points to a medal-laden World Championships for the 18-year-old when the event gets underway in Glasgow from July 13-19.

But despite her fast start to the year, Applegate is refusing to get carried away just yet.

'I am really pleased with my results so far this year,' she said. 'In February I broke the world record in the S14 100m butterfly and in March I qualified to represent Great Britain at this year's World Championships in Glasgow so it's all going well at the moment.

'I am confident that I have done everything I can in training and I will do everything I possibly can in my events at the World Championships.

'But I cannot control anyone else so I can never be confident in what the results will be, just try my very best.

'I have some skill goals during the World Championships working on my skills under pressure and although the World Championships are important these goals are in preparation for next year's Rio trials.'

It is no surprise that Applegate is not focusing on medals just yet, with next month's global gathering an important precursor ahead of next year's Rio Paralympics.

And the teenager is adamant thoughts of Brazil are never far away from her mind.

'It's important that I do my best at the World Championships and that's all I can do, I'm not worried about laying down any markers because it will all be different again next year going into trials for the Paralympics,' she added.

'Things change so quickly as we have already seen, people get injured, people retire, new people get classified or they are re-classified, people change nationalities, so anything can happen, you just have to be prepared for the unexpected.'
