The controversial Carter Cup semi-final between Brooke and Swardeston is set to be replayed 'in the interests of both the integrity and the spirit' of the competition.

Brooke thought they had reached their first Carter Cup final after causing an upset by beating their higher-level opponents with three wickets to spare last Sunday.

However that surprise result was thrown into doubt when a subsequent complaint was lodged about the eligibility of a Brooke player.

The situation has now been clarified, with a statement released on behalf of the Carter Cup committee saying: 'Following investigations in respect of an alleged breach of Carter Cup player eligibility rules in the above semi-final, the following decision has been made by the Carter Cup committee.

'In the interests of both the integrity and spirit of the Carter Cup competition, and the game as a whole, in accordance with the league constitution rule eight, the committee has determined that the match should be replayed on Sunday 26th July 2015. Brooke, as in the original game, will be the home team.

'The Carter Cup committee would like to thank both clubs for their patience whilst its investigation has taken place.'

Brooke were one of the inaugural members of the Carter Cup in 1969 but had never reached a semi-final before. The Norfolk Alliance Premier Division side looked to have then booked their place in a first final by beating Swardeston from the East Anglian Premier League.

The south Norfolk rivals will now do it all again though, on the same day that the competition's other semi-final between Norwich and Vauxhall Mallards will also be played, having been abandoned due to wet weather at Postwick last weekend.
