Youngsters from Norwich Swan Swimming Club were in fine form at the Norfolk County ASA Championships.

The galas were staged at a variety of swimming venues from Wymondham Leisure Centre, Breckland Leisure Centre in Thetford and UEA Sportspark in Norwich, where the young swimmers did themselves proud.

A number of them competed in the county championships for the very first time. Eleven-year-old Carmelo Almadin and Jessica Munford. 12, achieved their first ever East Region qualifying time.

In addition, Ben Woodhouse, Isabel Moore and Emma Bell all competed in the 13-year-old age group, and are less than half a second outside the regional times for the 100m backstroke, 50m breaststroke and 50m backstroke respectfully.

These three youngsters have two more opportunities to break through this barrier and make it to the East Region Championships, to be held in Luton at the end of May.

There was a great team atmosphere from the whole Norwich Swan team as 28 new club records were set, most notably by the determined Fraser Ryan who claimed seven new records in the 14 years age group and Tommy Chandler, 13, who claimed nine.

The more experienced swimmers did a great job helping and led by example.

Club captain Ellie Ronen dominated the ladies backstroke events winning all six possible titles in the 16-and-over and Open age-groups.

Tilly Anema, 14, emerged the overall winner in the 15 years age group accumulating 2,776 FINA points, claiming 10 championship titles in the process. Tilly is a renowned distance and open water freestyler and demonstrated this in winning the 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m gold medals in her own age group, and the Junior and Open Championship 400m freestyle titles in addition.

It was a clean sweep of breaststroke titles for Tommy Chandler in the 14 years age group. Tommy also won the 100m and 200m individual medley events and the 50m backstroke bringing his total of gold medals to six.

In the 100m backstroke, Catherine Brown won the Junior Ladies Championship with Swan team mates Tilly Anema, Christina Wilson and Peyton Ewbank claiming second, third and fourth spots respectfully.

Swan newcomer Katie Maloney, had a memorable debut, winning the 16 years and over 200m butterfly.

Rebecca Smith stamped her authority in the 13 years 50m sprint events claiming both the butterfly and freestyle golds.

Returning from sixth form at Hartpury College to compete in her favourite event, the 200m freestyle, Hannah Cooper proved she still has what it takes, beating all-comers to claim both the Ladies 16 years and over title and the coveted Senior Championship trophy.

With over 450 swims between them, Norwich Swan swimmers achieved 218 top-six places, an improvement on the number gained in 2015, reflecting the continued improvement within the club. Thirty-one swimmers gained at least one top-six place and 28 championship gold medals were won.
