There were plenty of happy faces at the finish of the Velo Club Norwich's 25-mile time trial on the Larling-Wymondham road, with many riders improving their personal bests.

Fastest of all was Matthew Senter, the King's Lynn rider lowering his PB to 47:52, while team-mate Ben Stancombe recorded 48:56 for fourth.

In between these two Norwich triathlete Joe Skipper finished in 48:55 and, perhaps the surprise of the day, 15-year-old Oliver Stockwell (Welwyn Wheelers) starting from an unseeded number 18, finished in 48:56.

This, subject to the usual checks, will be a new national juvenile age record.

Top woman was Denise Hurren (Sole Bay Sport) who knocked 1:05 off Sue Triplow's course record, set in this event last year.

Second-placed Becky Scofield (Tri-Anglia) was just five seconds slower than Hurren, and having started first, could legitimately claim to have held course record – for just over a minute.

Looking at weather conditions for clues as to why it was such a fast afternoon, one can only say it was grey and overcast with only very light wind and drizzle coming and going during the second half. Pressure at nearby weather stations seems to have been 1012mb while traffic levels seem to have been moderate.

Further south, conditions were wetter for the Eastern Counties CA 50, where the national 50 record fell to Paul Hart (Southend Whs) in 1:34:37, while Thetford rider Dave Green (CC Breckland) must surely have broken the East District CA record with his time of 1:39:11.

Next morning it was cold and damp for the Wisbech Wheelers 25, with a rising sidewind. Winners were Daniel Bloy (VeloVelocity, 52:42) and Kay Burgess (King's Lynn CC, 1:04:37)

At round two of the Lotus League circuit races, Gary Freeman (Fast Test) opened a six-second gap on a charging breakaway group. Sam Yates (Strada Sport) won the supporting race.

Seb Herrod (Strada Sport) was second in the PCH Road race near Saffron Walden after spending half the race in a two-man breakaway with winner Felix Barker. Top local finisher at the Ken Wright Memorial at Colchester was Harley Matthews (eighth).
