Amelia Williamson warming up nicely for County Championship defence

Competing in the Fairhaven Trophies, a competition which attracts leading amateurs from all over Europe to the course near Lytham St Annes, the 17-year-old from Royal Cromer finished runner-up for the second year running after recovering well from an indifferent start.

An opening round of 78 left Williamson with plenty to do but she responded to the challenge in excellent fashion, firing three successive 72s to keep the pressure on front-runner Louise Duncan.

The Scottish player had a five shot advantage over her Norfolk rival after the opening round but it was down to two at the end as she came in with a 292 total (73, 72, 75, 73).

Williamson also helped England One to second place in the team competiton behind Germany One in the company of Barclay Brown and Enrique Dimayuga.

The youngster's focus is now on matters closer to home, with the annual Norfolk Ladies' Amateur Championship getting under way at King's Lynn today, with Ryston Park's Tiffany Mills due to hit the first ball at 8am.

Williamson will start as strong favoruite to make it back-to-back wins following the success on her home course last year, although there are plenty of other contenders in the 32-strong field, which will be whittled down to 16 over two rounds of strokeplay.

The weekend will be taken up by matchplay golf, with the final due to get under way at 12.30pm on Sunday.

The most notable absentee is last year's runner-up Amy Taylor, who is now at university in the United States.

One player who will be in the field, Royal Norwich teenager Chloe Gibbs, finished a respectable 34th in the recent British Under-16 Girls Championships after rounds of 77, 77 and 84.

It will be a busy Sunday at King's Lynn, with the county men's team also in action in their opening Anglian League fixture of the season against Cambridgeshire.

Another county event, the Coronation Salvers, is taking place the same at Wensum Valley Golf Club from 11am.
