The weather extremes continued at Horning Sailing Club – after the previous weekend's fantastic conditions, winter returned with rain, cold winds and low temperatures.
Ironically, on Saturday HSC held their annual pursuit race and Spring Social, when the conditions felt like anything but Spring! Six hardy entrants took part in the Pursuit race, which resulted in a close finish, with the Splashes of Pippa and Jo Edwards just holding off competition from Bob Hancock, helming Reedling Osiris, at the finish.
Sunday was even cooler, with a strong and variable breeze. Geoff Stubbs made it two wins in two races in the Yeomans, whilst the closest racing was in the dinghies, with Ellie Edwards taking two wins in her Splash, despite tough competition from Edward Wildman's Laser and Jack Copping's Enterprise.
Thankfully the forecast looks much better for this weekend's Push the Boat Out open day as part of the Horning Boat Show on Saturday where the club is running free taster sails all day for all the family. The club is also keen to encourage entrants to the annual Three Rivers Race, sponsored by Yachtmaster Insurance Services, on June 2-3, with the closing date for entries extended to this Saturday.
The wintry conditions deterred some sailors in the Waveney & Oulton Broad YC's racing at the weekend, especially on Sunday.
In Saturday's fast handicap fleet Duncan Madin was well ahead in his K1 and won both races by more than two minutes on corrected time. Pete Matthews in his Solo took second place in race one while James Nourse (Laser) was second in the other. In the slow handicap fleet Thomas Betts (Laser 4.7) was first to finish in race one, but was beaten on corrected time by George Madin (RS Tera Pro) and in race two, Geoff Ansdell (Laser 4.7) won on handicap with Madin second.
On Sunday only two dinghies raced, with Simon Beckett (Laser radial) getting the better of Alan Cone (Solo). Three Waveneys raced on Saturday, with Simon and Caroline Marfleet winning in Iris, and two Squibs on Sunday with wins for Dave Gentry and Jackie Soards in Paramour.
