It is estimated that over 100,000 volunteers regularly give up their time to help grow the game - and three of them have been recognised here in Norfolk.

England Golf's Volunteers Week turned the spotlight on Sandy Johnson at Caldecott Hall and Sammy Martin and Angela Loveday at Royal Norwich.

Karen Woodrow, the England Golf Club Support Officer, covering Norfolk, personally thanked the volunteers.

Sandy runs regular sessions at her club, designed for people new to the game, or returning following an extended break. These sessions take place on a Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon on the club's academy course or the main course, depending on the participant's ability.

Norfolk Ladies' captain Sammy and Angela have been involved in the Royal Rookies session at Royal Norwich for the last eight years.

They help to support new and less experienced golfers at the club by providing opportunities for them to play and socialise with other golfers of a similar standard.

'It has been a privilege to personally say thank you to these ladies,' said Karen. 'Like so many club volunteers here in Norfolk they do a great job in attracting and supporting golfers into the game. But more importantly, through the welcoming and supportive environments they have created, they have offered players of all ages and ability the right playing and social opportunities to retain them in a game.'

The Norfolk Ladies County Golf Association held their Division Two meeting at Heacham Manor, with 27 players taking part.

On an excellent day for golf Judy Curtis (King's Lynn) won both the Handicap and Scratch Cups with a score of net 71 (87). The Bullard Trophy was won by Royal Cromer (Gill Storey, Gill McLeod and Sharon Yenson) with 148.

The men take centre stage tomorrow, with the Norfolk Handicap Championship for the Geoffrey Burroughes Salver taking place at Great Yarmouth and Caister. The event is limited to those who didn't play in the recent Amateur Championship, with a handicap limit of 18.

Defending champion Ashley Johnson of King's Lynn is back to defend his title.
