Shaun Aldous took the senior honours in the cyclo-cross at Foxhall, where much of the course is in woodland, sloping down to a stream.

His fleetness on both wheel and foot ensured that he was able to draw away on the climbs from Nick Ainsworth and Nathan Miller, his companions at the front of the field. On the flat grassy stretches Miller was able to claw something back - but not enough.

From the podium after the race, Aldous (Interbike RT) paid tribute to Miller, who as organiser of this Ipswich Bicycle Club event had started his day at 3am and was to be seen talking to the young riders he coaches minutes before the start of the senior race, in which he finished third, barely a minute down on Aldous and just 28 seconds behind Ainsworth.

Mark Farrow (API/Metrow) was leading veteran finishing sixth overall. New API team mate Robert Hunt recovered well to claim ninth place after a contre-temps at the plank obstacle where he failed to get his foot cleanly free of the pedal.

Matt Cook (Mildenhall CC) was the early leader in the Youth race but Luke Newby (Diss & District) closed the gap in mid-race and seized the opportunity when Cook slipped on a climb and was away to win.

The Under-12s course was largely flat, which suited George Wood (Southend Wheelers) who turned the tables on James Arden, winner two weeks ago at Chantry Park.

Among the youngest competitors were Sophie Holmes (Diss & District) who was eighth and James's younger brother Fraser, not yet five, who spun a tiny gear to great effect, taking 11th place - making him almost certainly the youngest racing member of the 128 year-old Norwich Amateur BC.

t The Kentford to Bury St Edmunds road has seen some super-fast rides in the past, but there were no additions to the list in the CC Sudbury 25 mile event which rounded off the local time trial season. Winner Sam Barker's time of 53.30 looks impressive, but the API star was in fact four minutes down on his best.

Conditions seemed good, but on setting off riders found themselves climbing a long drag into a rising east wind. Most never quite recovered, though Gary Matthews of Ipswich Tri-club headed the short list of improvers with his 1-1:50 ride and Guy Stevens of the East Anglian CC also improved, in his case to 57:56.

t The coming weekend features a great variety of cycling events.

The Zak Carr Memorial Ride will leave Shelfanger Road car park, Diss, at 9am. More riders are expected to join in at Queen's Square in Attleborough, Zak's home town. Details from Rob Hunt (01379 783233).

The Marin Dusk-to-Dawn night MTB race starts at 7pm on Saturday, in the forest south of Brandon. On top of the numerous relay teams, nearly 100 riders are due to race solo right through, with experienced night racers Jason Turner and Neil Stevens from VC Norwich/Fitt Signs and Mark Elmy (Godric CC) among them.

If a short, sharp effort is more to your taste there is a Hill Climb starting at Stoke Holy Cross at 11am on Sunday. For scenery - and probably mud - there is Norfolk CTC's Roughstuff Ride (25miles, about half of it off-road) from Cawston Village Hall, with progressively quicker groups off at 9, 9.30 and 10am on Sunday. Andy Hurrell 01603 403576 will tell you more.
