Visitors to the Blickling Estate are promised a dazzling evening on August 12, thanks to their event The Great British Prom.

Mid Norfolk Singers are set to perform one of their biggest gigs yet this summer.

The Dereham-based choir will perform 'Jerusalem' live in front of thousands of classical concert-goers at Blickling on August 12 after winning the inaugural Great British Prom Choir Competition.

They were established in 1946 as an educational evening class and over the years have grown in numbers to approximately 85.

Jane Fannon, chair of Mid Norfolk Singers, said: 'We feel honoured and excited to be singing at this splendid event.'

The Great British Prom sees the National Symphony Orchestra, one of the leading orchestras in the country, perform a veritable feast of iconic and rousing anthems from all corners of the United Kingdom. They will be joined on stage by globally renowned soprano Annette Wardell, Classical Brit Award-winning Welsh vocal group Only Men Aloud and The City of Norwich Pipe Band.

The specially devised programme will faithfully recreate the buzz of the Last Night of the Proms and will culminate in a spectacular firework display, choreographed to the music in the delightful outdoor setting of Blickling Estate.

Entrants to the choir competition were simply asked to post a one minute clip of them performing a song of their choice on The Great British Prom's website. Shortlisted choirs were then posted on Facebook, with the number of likes each choir received being taken into account during the judging process. In total, the shortlist was viewed by over 100,000 Facebook users, with over 4,000 votes.

Conductor Anthony Inglis, who judged the competition, said: 'All the choirs that entered the competition were fantastic and it was a really difficult decision to choose the ultimate winner. In the end I selected Mid Norfolk Singers for their overall performance, which I felt would best suit the occasion. I particularly appreciated their ability to take on a difficult piece in their audition and perform it to a high standard.'

In addition to singing 'Jerusalem' during the main part of the performance, Mid Norfolk Singers will have the opportunity to perform at the start of the concert before the main programme begins. Furthermore, they will feature in the concert programme and each member of the choir will receive a complimentary ticket for a guest to witness their performance.

The other shortlisted choirs were Encore, the Norwich Community Choir and Vocalights.

Lisa Ward, Director of Revival Productions, said: 'I want to congratulate Mid Norfolk Singers on their achievement of winning the inaugural Great British Prom Choir Competition. I'm sure that their performance will add something special to our already unmissable programme, which has established The Blickling Prom as a permanent fixture in the Norfolk social calendar.'

The Great British Prom will also be visiting Bolesworth Castle in Cheshire, Bowood House in Wiltshire and Knebworth House in Hertfordshire this summer where similar competitions have also taken place.
