For eight months, youngsters across Wymondham have poured over history books, sharpened their creative writing skills and channelled their inner film-makers.

Pupils from 12 schools in the Wymondham cluster have been involved in the town's Great War project, which explores the impact of World War One on Wymondham and its people.

And the fruits of their labour will be on display at a special commemoration day this weekend to mark the culmination of the lottery-funded project.

Youngsters were tasked with creating multimedia responses to the war, and worked with professional artists, writers and film-makers to bring their ideas to life.

Pupils from Robert Kett Junior School masterminded a 26-minute documentary with film-maker Sally-Anne Lomas, while Ashleigh and Browick Road Infant Schools opted for an animated project.

Youngsters from Spooner Row will present a dance piece, with Wymondham College and Wymondham High Academy joining forces to put on a play.

Bel Greenwood, artistic director, said: 'It has been quite an experience for everyone involved in the project. People have really got behind this project and supported us. It has at times been very moving.

'Local people have shared family stories with the pupils and the children's own responses to the material and the idea of war has often been unexpected and profound, even if it has been sometimes hard to imagine life without the freedoms and technology of today.'

Mrs Greenwood described the event as a 'real local effort'.

Novelist Sarah Ridgard and Pip Woodward, chairman of Wymondham Heritage Museum, will present awards to the prize winners of a creative writing competition held across all cluster schools.

The day will close with commemoration service to remember those who died in the conflict.

Robyn Llewellyn, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund for the East of England, said: 'This project is a good example of how the Heritage Lottery Fund supports projects that benefit heritage, people and communities.

'It's particularly poignant to hear about the enthusiastic response from the schools and young people who have been involved in this important project.'

The free event will run on Saturday, July 5 at the Wymondham and District Ex Service's Social Club, on Friarscroft Lane. For more information visit www.wymondhamsgreatwar.blogspot.co.uk
