A woman who has been growing her dreadlocks for eight years will be offering people the chance to cut her hair at a fundraiser in aid of a seven-year-old girl battling cancer.
Despite having never met Beccles schoolgirl Amber Gooch-Boags, 51-year-old Sharon High heard of her battle with an inoperable brain tumour and wanted to do something to help.
The tumour has damaged Amber's facial nerve causing paralysis to the right side of her face as well as damage to hearing in her right ear. She is currently undergoing specialist treatment in America which is not available in the UK.
And to help support her treatment and family, a fundraiser is being staged at Beccles Free School on Saturday night, October 7, where Miss High will have her 73 dreads cut off.
She said: 'My sister passed away two-and-a-half years ago from breast cancer at the age of 46 and I decided to do something to raise a bit of money. I was going to do it for Macmillan, and then I heard about Amber and thought it would be good to support a local girl.
'A friend of mine told me they were organising a fundraiser for her so I thought it would be good to combine the two together.
'Her family have done some fundraising and she's over in America having some treatment so they need all the support they can get.'
Miss High, who has a 15-year-old son and is also raising her sister's six-year-old daughter, said her hair is a big part of her life.
'I am known around Beccles as the crazy lady with the dreads, so it is a big thing for me to have it cut off as it's part of my personality.
'I will be sad to see it go, but it will be worth it to help this brave little girl in America.'
People will be given the chance to make a donation in exchange for cutting off a dreadlock.
The fundraising evening, which runs from 7.30pm to 11pm, will also include live music from Norfolk-based five piece band Wapscallions as well as a bar, hot dogs and a raffle.
Miss High thanked all those who have donated raffle prizes as well as Beccles Free School for hosting the event, and local company Boomting Bunting for decorating the hall for free.
Tickets for the night cost £10 from 07791014885 or on the door.
