Work on a main road leading to Downham Market which is a key route for lorries and commuters has been hampered by the recent wintry weather.

The freezing conditions over the last two weeks has led to the second phase of work on the A1122 between Nordelph and Salters Lode being postponed.

The road closure and diversion currently in place are expected to be lifted tomorrow (Tuesday) as the first phase of work is expected to finish today.

The second phase of work will start on January 10 which means the road will be open over the Christmas period. Repair work will instead be carried out on Barroway Drove and Lady Drove.

Once underway, the second phase of work will require eight full days of suitable weather to complete.

The underlying peat and soft ground conditions combined with heavy traffic, especially HGVs, have led to the failure of the road's foundation layers along parts of the stretch.

Norfolk County Council has apologised for the delays in completing this 800,000 project.
