She was in critical care just two months before her big award win.

But even the challenge of making it to the Stars of Norfolk event wasn't too much for Joyce Hammond, 84.

She won the Unsung Hero of the Year and overall Star of Norfolk at last year's glittering ceremony for her dedication to her village of Dickleburgh.

The Stars of Norfolk Awards is the second annual ceremony which recognises community stalwarts doing good in their community.

And Mrs Hammond is a woman who fits that mould. She has been a staunch Royal British Legion supporter for 60 years and has dedicated her life to helping others.

Now a year on the former chairman of the RBL group is still riding the high of her award win, with the trophies displayed proudly in her home.

'Never in a million years did I think I would win an award like that,' she said.

'I've always loved working for the village because I love it. But I am one of those people who never wants thanks for anything I do. But I was just so grateful someone had recognised it.'

Mrs Hammond moved to the south Norfolk community as an evacuee at the age of 12.

During her years with Dickleburgh Royal British Legion (RBL) women's section she was standard bearer for 57 years, she sold poppies for 55 years, has organised fundraising events, has edited the parish news magazine for 30 years and has been involved with the village church all her life.

It is people like Mrs Hammond who we want to recognise again this year one again, because we know there are plenty of others working tirelessly without the recognition they truly deserve.

'I couldn't really believe I had won, there were so many other lovely people there.' she modestly added.

The awards are in partnership with Norfolk County Council, district councils, the EDP and its many sister titles across Norfolk.

Anyone can be nominated in the 16 categories and several nominations can be made by one person.

The closing date for entries is Monday, October 13, with the awards evening on November 20 at Norwich Castle.
