A helicopter and both lifeboats from Wells were launched after a member of the public reported a dinghy floating out to sea.
The report was made at around 8.45pm when the dinghy was seen east of Scolt Head. After the Wells inshore lifeboat was dispatched the vessel was found with no sign of the crew.
The search was called off after the boat's owner confirmed no persons had been aboard.
