One of north Norfolk's most iconic landmarks has been sealed off by the police.

The pier in Cromer, which was wrecked by 2013's storm surge, has been closed amid safety fears ahead of tonight's anticipated high tide.

All pedestrian access to the town's promenade have also been sealed off and storm-chasers have been warned to stay away.

The decision was made after the army was drafted in to help evacuate homes and businesses in Great Yarmouth.

Communities along the north Norfolk coast are also bracing themselves for the worst.

A statement issued by Cromer Pier said: 'The Pier and promenade will be closed to the public today from 2pm due to adverse weather conditions, high winds and high water.

'Please do not venture down to the Pier, the next high tide is 7.06pm.'

But it added: 'We expect to be open for business as usual tomorrow from 10am You can of course book tickets for the 2017 programme online 24 hours a day.'
