Major routes in Norfolk and Waveney remain impassable this morning (Friday) as snowdrifts and treacherous ice put those on the roads at risk.

The A140 between Pulham and Long Stratton was still blocked this morning, despite the best efforts of farmers, businesses, snow ploughs and emergency services. But it reopened just before 9am. Other issues included:

• Queues building on the A146 southbound between Norwich and Thurton due to drifting snow.

• The A134 between Thetford and Mundford is also reported to be closed.

• Cars were stuck on the B1149 bridge in Cawston.

• Near Diss Golf Club, in Stuston, a lorry stuck in drifting snow blocked the road.

• A broken down lorry between the Brundall roundabout and the Postwick slip road was causing delays.

• The NDR was closed from the A140 slip road heading eastbound.

• Reepham Road in Norwich was closed due to snow drifts.

• On the B1354 Briston Road a van stuck in the snow caused a closure. Police were on scene to dig them out.

In Poringland doctor Ciaran Scott and his partner Nikki Ellis struggled to leave the village this morning. In a video from their vehicle's dashcam, Miss Ellis - an operating department practitioner at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, can be heard describing the conditions as 'impossible'.

Norfolk Constabulary warned the roads were 'still extremely hazardous' and urged people to stay home if possible.

But police, ambulance and fire crews were called out overnight to help stricken motorists.

On the railways, the extreme conditions were causing faults and problems with trains and infrastructure.

Operator Greater Anglia said 'Further bad weather is also forecast for this afternoon, which may create further problems.'

And a number of bus services were cancelled or revised.
