PEOPLE across Waveney awoke this morning (Saturday) to discover a light dusting of snow had fallen overnight as Suffolk escaped the worst of the snowy conditions.

While parts of East Anglia suffered more snow last night, early predictions of a significant downfall in Waveney proved unfounded – but forecasters have warned 'significant' amounts of snow could fall tomorrow evening and into Monday, with the warning of blizzards and possible snow drifts.

Norwich-based forecasters Weatherquest said the snow would ease today but the largest downfall, as much as five inches, has been forecast for tomorrow evening.

Suffolk County Council said 43 gritters would be sent out over the weekend in a battle to keep the roads open.

Guy McGregor, cabinet member for roads at the county council, said: 'Our teams will be doing all they can to keep traffic moving and ensure public safety. However, it is equally important for people to use local grit bins to make travelling easier and safer in their local area where they can.

'Gritting teams have worked hard all week to ensure grit heaps and bins are topped up and ready for communities to use during freezing temperatures. The county council is also advising residents to check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours during the icy weather whenever they can.

'Abandoned vehicles make it very difficult for gritting lorries to access their routes, so it is important for anyone considering travelling to think carefully and assess the weather conditions before leaving the house.'

With sporting fixtures suffering, and the cancellation of all adult football games on council park pitches across the district today and tomorrow, all matches concerning Lowestoft Town FC this weekend – Kingstonian v Lowestoft, Lowestoft Reserves v Stanway Rovers Reserves and Lowestoft Ladies v Norwich City Reserves Ladies – have been postponed due to the current weather conditions.

Kirkley and Pakefield FC have also cancelled all their senior fixtures today and all youth matches tomorrow (Sunday).
