Most people may have given up on their New Year's fitness resolutions - but one man is sticking with his as part of a challenge to run a half-marathon for every month this year.

Dave Walton, 37, from Watton, is embarking on the challenge to raise money for Cancer Research.

By the end of 2017 he will have run 157 miles, which is roughly the same distance from Norwich to Birmingham.

On top of that, the IT technician at Springwood School, King's Lynn is training three nights a week and taking part in parkruns over the weekend to gear up for the year ahead.

The idea came to him when he missed out on the chance to join the London Marathon but wanted to do something for charity after losing loved ones to cancer.

'I know so many people affected by it,' he said. 'I lost my grandfather and uncle but my friend survived breast cancer recently thanks to the treatment she was given.

'I have ran for the charity before so wanted to keep that support going.'

He has set himself a target of £500, of which he has already raised £195 on his JustGiving crowdfunding page.

Last month Mr Walton ran a half-marathon at Victoria Park in London and crossed the finish line at one hour and 44 minutes.

He will be taking part in half-marathons all over the UK, with his second race taking place on Sunday, February 26, at Thorpe Park theme park.

Future runs include Silverton next month, Norwich in April and the Great North Run in September, the largest half marathon in the world.

Mr Walton added: 'I used to run as a kid and started doing it properly in 2001.

'I've been taking part in half-marathons every two or three years, I have to compensate for my unhealthy diet.

'My first race of the year was all right - it was a bit cold and I overindulged over the Christmas period, so I could've done better.

'I have set myself a target of finishing every marathon under two hours.

'I'm not a team sports person, so I run instead.'
