Watton Junior School has come out of special measures after it was judged satisfactory in a recent Ofsted inspection.

The school in Brandon Road, which has 206 pupils aged between seven and 11, is led by acting headteacher Douglas Dale.

Following an inspection in December 2010 the school was put into special measures and underwent two subsequent visits.

The Ofsted report said: 'This is now a satisfactory school where well-behaved pupils benefit from good teaching and effective leadership and management. The school is not judged good overall because it has not fully overcome the legacy of poor progress made by pupils in previous years.

'Pupils are currently making good progress in a large majority of lessons. This is closing the gap caused by their previous underachievement. Attainment is above average in reading, average in mathematics, and below average, but improving rapidly, in writing.'

It was found that pupils enjoyed learning at the school and felt safe because the bullying was rare, according to the report.

Improvements to the curriculum have increased the time spent on teaching literacy and good leadership has created 'high staff morale and significant improvements in teaching, learning and behaviour'.

The report added: 'Parents and carers are increasingly involved in their children's learning and have much greater confidence in the school.'

Mr Dale said: 'I am very proud that we have come out of special measures so quickly and, as I said in letters to everyone, it's all down to the hard work of the pupils, staff, governors and parents. We just look to be going from strength to strength at the moment.'
