Major plans for up to 850 homes, a new primary school, marina, retail developments and a new spine road have been resubmitted as part of an ambitious vision for south Lowestoft.

Proposals to transform a swathe of under-used or vacant land known as the Brooke Peninsula and Jeld Wen site on the south side of Lake Lothing have been lodged with Waveney District Council by developers Cardy Construction.

The revised plans were submitted to the council last month after major concerns from locals earlier this year over development on the County Wildlife Site.

But people living nearby remain angry over its potential impact – and they have organised a public meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) at 7pm at the Whitton Hall in Hawthorn Avenue.

Mike Warner, from Heath Road, is involved with the meeting. He said: 'The County Wildlife Site has been designated as the second most important place in Lowestoft for wildlife, with numerous protected species. I don't think putting a road on it is protecting it.'

David Ritchie, Waveney's cabinet member for planning, said: 'This proposed development comes after many years of detailed preparation by the council, which included widespread public consultation and examination in preparation of our Area Action Pan (AAP) for Lake Lothing and the Outer Harbour.

'The AAP received considerable cross-party support and these developments are fantastic opportunities, which would provide a considerable number of jobs both during and after construction for many years to come.

'It goes without saying that any developments take proper account of a whole range of issues including traffic, landscape, ecology, facilities, and the views of the public will, as always, be taken into consideration.'
