A race against time to save a community centre from closure has been won after £20,000-worth of funds was raised.

North Wymondham Community Centre on Lime Tree Avenue faced permanent closure following a building inspection which revealed £17,500 of damage to the roof.

In July 2017 Tom North, from North and Hawkins building consultancy in Norwich, identified issues with the roof bracing which could have resulted in the entire roof collapsing if left.

Mr North said the roof lacked the strength needed to support heavy snow fall and posed a serious risk to life if it collapsed.

However work to make the site safe is now complete thanks to a combined fundraising effort by individual donors and community events and grants from the National Lottery and South Norfolk District Council.

A spokesman from the centre said: 'The trustees and supporting volunteers would like to express their appreciation to Tom and Norfolk Pro Help for their invaluable assistance, during what proved to be a very challenging period for the voluntary organisation.'
