MP Henry Bellingham calls for better signs on the 'dangerous' stretch of Gayton Road

Norfolk police have said the driver of a Kia Rio involved in Wednesday's collision was a 56-year-old woman from the Swaffham area.

A couple injured in the same crash were also from the Swaffham area.

An MP is calling for better warning signs along the stretch of road following the collision.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash, which happened on the B1145 Gayton Road, at Bawsey, near the junction with Brow of the Hill, at around 11.30am.

Officers said two vehicles – the a Kia Rio and a black and silver Mitsubishi 4x4 truck – were involved.

Emergency services, including the air ambulance, were called to the scene and the road was closed for more than four hours.

Two people travelling in the Mitsubishi suffered were taken to the Queen Elizabeth hospital. A male in his late 50s had minor chest injuries and a female had minor ankle injuries.

The driver of the Kia died.

The collision happened close to the Bawsey Bumps – a stretch of road where there are a series of blind humps.

North West Norfolk MP Henry Bellingham said: 'My heartfelt sympathies and condolences go out to the family of the victims.'

He added he had received letters 'constantly over the years' about the B1145.

'There have been letters from the Bawsey parish meeting, Ashwicken Parish Council – they've been regularly calling for improvements,' he said. 'It's a very dangerous bit of road because it's straight but you've got those blind humps.'

The speed limit was reduced from 60 to 50mph along some stretches of the road, between Mintlyn and Ashwicken, after a fatal crash more than 20 years ago.

'There may well be an argument now for reducing that to 40 and having more warning signs,' said Mr Bellingham. 'Maybe there should be double white lines to stop people overtaking on the humps.'

John Eayres, chairman of Leziate Parish Council said: 'We've been trying to get the speed limit down – not only on that road but along Station Road. I don't think we stand much chance.'

Four rapid response vehicles, two ambulances and a paramedic car were sent to the scene, close to Bawsey Pits and Leziate Park country club. The East Anglian Air Ambulance landed in a roadside field.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said: 'The casualties were initially trapped and despite a huge effort from all emergency services involved, a woman in her 50s sadly died at the scene. A couple in their 70s sustained minor injuries and were taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital via land ambulance.' An investigation into the cause of the collision is under way.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or the manner of driving of either vehicle should contact Sgt Peter Howlett at Swaffham Roads Policing on 101.
