Electricity supplies have been restored to more than 170 UK Power Networks customers in the Hempton area after they were cut off for two hours following a fire this morning.

The fire, at 5.27am, was caused by a fault to an overhead cable fault close to Fakenham Racecourse.

The fault originally affected six customers but a further 172 customers had their power cut off at 10.40am to enable emergency repairs to be carried out.

All supplies were restored at 12.39pm.

A spokesman for UK Power Networks said: 'We appreciate how difficult it is to be without electricity and apologise to all those affected.'

Fire fighters from Fakenham attended shortly before 9am to make the scene safe.

An ambulance was not requested and nobody was harmed.
