It was big night for UKIP in Great Yarmouth as they became the second largest party on the borough council.

UKIP gained four seats: three from Labour and one from an independent councillor.

The party's group leader, Kay Grey, cheered when the results came in and by the end of the night UKIP were confirmed as the second largest party on the borough council.

UKIP's Paul Hammond took Yarmouth North from the independent councillor Colin Fox and Sue Hacon gained Bradwell South and Hopton ward, Chris Walch Central and Northgate ward and Alan Grey, a UKIP county councillor, took Bradwell North.

The Conservatives held on the four seats they were recontesting.

Overall turnout was 29.9pc, which is lower than in previous years.

13 seats out of a total of 39 were up for grabs - as councillors are elected on a rotational basis.

The new make up of Great Yarmouth borough council has the Conservatives with 14 seats, UKIP 12, Labour 11 and two independents.

It is the first time in modern political history that Labour are in third place on the borough council.
