Norfolk's Freemasons held their Provincial Grand Lodge meeting at St Andrew's Hall on Thurday, where they were given a talk by a local cancer researcher looking to fund research into prostate cancer.
Professor Colin Cooper from the UEA spoke to around 400 members of the Freemasons to pitch for funds for The Tiger Test.
The appeal will last for ten months and support the purchase of an Affymetrix Microarray Scanner to enable early testing into prostate cancer based in Norwich.
The test aims to differentiate between the 10% of aggressive 'tiger' prostate cancers and 90% of the harmless 'pussycat' versions of the disease.
PGM Stephen Allen said: 'The cost of the scanner is £144,000. I really hope we can mae a significant contribution to this appeal.'
The Freemasons' Grand Charity has previously given £1 million to fund separate male cancer research by Mr Cooper.
