Fire crews were also called in to release two casualties from the vehicles on Gayton Road.
One man with chest injuries was freed by the brigade soon after arrival at about 11.10am but a second casualty with serious leg injuries took more than an hour to release from the wreckage and into the care of ambulance crews.
Despite the air ambulance being on standby, the two men were taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment by land ambulances.
