Tributes have been paid to a 15-year-old boy who died days after being rescued from Beccles Lido.

The teenager was pulled unconscious from the water by lifeguards at the pool last Thursday, and died tragically at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge yesterday.

Beccles Lido is closed to the general public today as a mark of respect.

Shaun Crowley, a director of the Lido, said: 'Everyone involved with the pool is deeply saddened and shocked by the events of the last week and our thoughts and deepest condolences go to the boy's family, carers and friends.

'We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their kind messages on behalf of the boy, his family and friends, and our staff.

'We are truly humbled by everyone's support and at this stage we would respectfully request that you understand we are unable to make any further comment.'

The boy was rescued by lifeguards who started resuscitation at about 6.40pm. Paramedics were called to the pool in Puddingmoor where they treated him before he was taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital by air ambulance.

He was then transferred to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, where he died.

A police spokesman said there did not appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident and they would be preparing a file for the coroner.

Beccles mayor Hugh Taylor said: 'That is really sad news and our hearts, the hearts of the whole community, go out to his family and friends. We were all praying for him and hoping so much that he would recover. On behalf of Beccles Town Council and everyone in the town, I would like to express our sincerest condolences to everyone who knew him, cared for him and loved him too.'

The rescue happened less than two weeks after the pool opened for the summer season.

Tributes have been flooding in on the Beccles Lido Facebook page.

One person wrote: 'Very tragic for everyone involved. Our thoughts and condolences to the family and to everyone at the lido who will, no doubt, be greatly affected by this sad incident.'

Another said: 'Thoughts are with the young lad's family, no one should to go through the pain of loosing a child. Thoughts are also with the staff involved, I hope they will be cared for as well as this will affect them greatly. A sad day.'
