Carrow Road river bridge in Norwich will be closed this weekend from 6am on Saturday morning, so that 11 carriageway deck panels can be replaced.
The work will carry on until it is complete, says Norfolk County Council, and the most disruptive and noisy operations have been programmed to take place during the day to minimise night-time disturbance to properties nearby.
Signed diversion routes will be in place for vehicles, but the footways will remain open to pedestrians throughout.
The road across the bridge will reopen to vehicles between 10pm on Sunday and 6am on Monday.
The works will be carried out for Norfolk County Council by May Gurney and will cost £50,000.
