An emergency traffic order has come into effect in Lowestoft to help alleviate traffic congestion caused by major roadworks in the town centre.
The Highways Agency has introduced the order in the Station Square area of the town after a request last week by Mark Bee, the leader of Suffolk County Council, and Colin Law, the leader of Waveney District Council.
The order means that temporary traffic lights set up at the Station Square which caused lengthy tailbacks for traffic heading north towards the A12 Bascule Bridge have been removed.
However the lights' removal means that Denmark Road is closed off to southbound traffic between Katwijk Way and Station Square with a mile long diversion in place to reach the bridge.
The roadworks are being carried out by Suffolk County Council to improve the access of the A12/Commercial Road junction.
It was hoped the work will be finished by the end of this month, but the access project will now carry on until May 6.
