It was a day of tragedy on Norfolk and Suffolk roads yesterday as three people were killed in two separate incidents.
A man died on Southery Road, Feltwell, at around 6.45am after his white Nissan van went into a ditch.
Fire crews from Downham Market and Littleport attended the crash, where the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 55-year-old man from the Thetford area has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been released on bail.
A blue Toyota truck was also involved, and police are asking for witnesses to contact them.
In the second accident a man and woman died when their car was involved in a head-on crash with an HGV in Great Barton.
The accident between a car and lorry happened at 10.45am on the A143.
The road was closed by police in both directions between Compiegne Way in Bury St Edmunds and the Bunbury Arms in Great Barton.
The two victims, who had not been named last night but are believed to come from Suffolk, were both travelling in the car and were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Neil Bomford Haulage vehicle was on its way to the company's base in Harleston having returned from Nottingham, and had just exited the A14. A spokesman from the company said the driver, who was not injured, was in 'great shock'.
He added: 'It's a tragic accident for the two people.'
Pat Dacey, western district commander for Suffolk Fire and Rescue, said: 'Firefighters were called to the scene of a road traffic collision at 10.43 this morning where it was confirmed that the driver and passenger in a car had died during a head-on collision with a lorry. Our crews used hydraulic equipment to remove the roof of the vehicle.
'This was a challenging and saddening incident and the sympathies of the fire service are with the victims and their families.'
There have been a number of serious accidents along the A143 in recent years, with many residents calling for a bypass to alleviate pressure on the main road through the village.
A spokesman from Suffolk police said that a number of people may have witnessed the accident and left the scene before to their arrival.
