On Saturday the Thetford and District Model Railway Society held a show in the Charles Burrell Centre in Staniforth Road.

The show featured clubs from across the region and saw intricate model tracks proudly being displayed by model railway enthusiasts.

Among the tracks and model trains was a layout by Thetford club member Gerry Riggs, who had taken about 15 years to create his fictional Creek, Grone and Rattleswick track based on a town on the English/Welsh border.

Mr Riggs display included a train crossing a river over a viaduct, a rail depot and wharf.

The retired engineer said: 'I get great joy from model railway making and children love seeing the trains in action, especially over bridges or through tunnels.

'I suppose all our club members are big kids at heart.'

It is the first time the society has put on a show in Thetford for five years.

Other displays on included a track layout based on the 1980s Aberdeen area, a fictional section of the former Great Central Railway London extension route to Marylebone and the Calder Valley line near Rochdale.

There were also trade stands for enthusiasts to pick up model kits and books.

The Thetford and District Model Railway Society was formed in 1976 and meets every Wednesday night at the Charles Burrell Centre.

It has 17 members, with the youngest being 16.

The society had been previously based at Breckland Middle School in Brandon and Kilverstone Hall.

Society chairmen Ian Dixon said everyone attending Saturday's show had 'gone home happy' and it was hoped a similar show could be held next year to celebrate the group's 40th anniversary,

He said the aim of the event had been to feature the best layouts from East Anglian enthusiasts.

Explaining the enjoyment of model trains Mr Dixon said; 'As a hobby you get to use wood works skills and electronics. It is like a 3D art form,

'Your layout is your kingdom.
