Breckland Council's Bin it for Good project has been raising money for three charities since September, with Thetford Food Bank the latest to benefit.

The Riversdale Centre and the Charles Burrell Centre also benefited.

Each charity was allocated a month, after which they were donated a sum of money based on the reduction in litter in Thetford during that time.

Specially designated bins were placed in the town centre to aid the project.

Each charity received £150 from the scheme, which was organised in partnership with Keep Britain Tidy and Serco.

Ali James, volunteer manager at the Food Bank, said: 'This funding is especially welcome in the run up to Christmas, a time when many people in crisis will find it difficult to put food on the table.

'The funds will be put to good use in providing vital supplies to those who have nowhere else to turn.'

Ms James was handed the money by Trevor Carter, Breckland councillor, Robert Kybird, mayor of Thetford, and Glynis Irish, mayoress.

Mr Carter said: 'We have been told by some of the charities involved that publicity from the project has really helped raise their profile locally and, in the case of the Riversdale Centre, has resulted in a new tenant and a new service for Thetford residents.

'Everyone has benefited from this initiative which has spread the anti-litter message, helped keep the streets of Thetford clean and raised funds for local good causes.'

The Thetford litter reduction scheme is one of seven pilots run by local authorities throughout the country this autumn as part of a national Keep Britain Tidy project.

Participating local authorities will now report back to Keep Britain Tidy who will review the project and recommend ways in which the organisation can work with councils on litter reduction initiatives in the future.
