The switch means that Adnams now uses 100% renewable-source energy across its offices, stores and distribution centre.

The carbon saving is equivalent to an average family car travelling three million miles – 120 times around the world – or the annual energy usage of over 200 UK homes.

Ben Orchard, Adnams' environmental sustainability manager, said the company was pleased to be among the first to achieve the landmark.

He said: 'As a sustainable business we are really keen to encourage the increased use and generation of renewable electricity in the UK, helping to reduce our impact on the planet and remove reliance on fossil fuels.'

The Southwold firm is a member of the EDP/EADT Top100 list of Norfolk and Suffolk's biggest companies by turnover.
