A six-year-old girl who lost her grandfather to terminal cancer has raised more than 100 for charity with an Easter fete.

Luella Brookes, who organised everything from the guest list to invitations to the entertainment, donated 126 to Marie Curie Cancer Care following the death of Owen Easter in February.

Mr Easter, 73, who was diagnosed with lung cancer just before Christmas, was admitted to the West Suffolk Hospital prior to his death where he received care from Marie Curie nurses.

In gratitude, his granddaughter invited about 12 family and friends to the event in her back garden on April 1 where they took part in a tombola, raffle, guessing competitions, fake tattoos and other activities, all thought up by the schoolgirl. Prizes were also awarded.

Her mother, Mel Brookes, 41, from Jasmine Close in Thetford, said she was 'proud' of her daughter, who attends Wortham Primary School, near Diss.

She added: 'We didn't know how to deal with it but she said she wanted to do something for him and said she would give the money to the nurses.

'She is so thoughtful and kind-hearted it didn't surprise me that she would think of something like this to honour her granddad's memory but we are so proud of what she has achieved.

'We were all going through the grieving process and it took our minds off it. Everyone who was invited knew my Dad and loved him because he was a wonderful man and they had so much fun.

'He'd have loved to have been there and would have been very proud of her.'
