How lucky am I?

That was the delighted response from community stalwart Betty Brown as she attended a glittering awards ceremony with top stars and royalty.

Betty Brown, 84 and from Scratby, attended the finals of the Pride of Britain awards on Monday night in London.

She had been invited to the event due to her role in supporting disability causes.

Mrs Brown rubbed shoulders with singers Michael Ball and Alfie Boe at the awards, which were presented by Carol Vorderman and attended by the Duke of Cambridge and prime minister Theresa May.

Mrs Brown said: 'The whole day spent at The Pride of Britain awards was really great as there were so many wonderful people who go that extra mile to help their fellow human beings.

'There were lots of famous faces attending from the entertainment and sporting world also politicians and of course Prince William and the prime minister.

'The stars all mingled with us I have so many photos to remember the evening and many lovely stories.

I met the two people I wanted to meet, Michael Ball and Alfie Boe.

'I love the photo of me gazing up at Michael Ball. How lucky is that at 84 years old?'

Mrs Brown has raised money for various disabled groups including the National Society for the Disabled and was one of the founders of the Marina Centre Physically Disabled Swim Club in Great Yarmouth.

Mrs Brown was diagnosed with polio when she was 18 and became wheelchair bound with the condition.

She started her charity work by donating art work to local craft shops and giving the money from the sales to various charities.

In 2012 she had the honour of carrying the Olympic torch through the borough.

The Mirror's Pride of Britain Awards in partnership with TSB celebrate the achievements of truly remarkable people who make our world a better place.

Among the people recognised were PC Keith Palmer, who died protecting Parliament during the Westminster Bridge terror attack in March, and the London Fire Brigade for tackling the Grenfell Tower blaze which killed at least 80 people in June.

The national awards ceremony will be shown on ITV on November 7.
