A call was made to the emergency services after fumes could be seen coming from inside a green broadband box on South Market Road, opposite the entrance to car park to the Market Gates shopping centre.

A low-voltage cable fault is believed to have caused smoke to gather inside the unit.

Two appliances from Great Yarmouth and Gorleston attended and crews used thermal image cameras, fire extinguishers and a gas monitors to extinguish.

Workmen from UK Power Networks are on the scene and it is hoped power will be restored by 5.45pm.

A spokesman for UK Power Networks said: 'UK Power Networks engineers are working as quickly and as safely as possible to restore power to 95 properties in the South Market Road area of Great Yarmouth following a fault on an underground cable at 11.30am.

'We understand how difficult it is to be without power and apologise for any inconvenience this is causing.'
