Plans to move a bus stop away from the scene of a fatal accident in a drive to improve road safety have been branded 'nonsensical'.

Michael Rawson, 74, from Holt, died days after he was in a collision with a car, shortly after getting off a bus, on the A148 at High Kelling on New Year's Eve.

Concerns were raised at the time over an unlit section of road.

Now Norfolk County Council are proposing to remove the bus shelter opposite the High Kelling Post Office and create a new stop near the North Norfolk Railway Station in Holt.

However, a leading councillor is concerned that the new site is on land earmarked by The Norfolk Orbital Railway for the extension of the line.

Speaking at Monday night's meeting of Holt Town Council, deputy mayor Michael Hill said: 'To put it where there is a possibility of something else happening seems nonsensical.'

Norfolk County Council revealed their plans, which are currently out to consultation, also include a new pedestrian crossing point, estimated to cost £10,000.

And, if approved, work could start early in the new year.

A spokesperson for the local authority said: 'Norfolk County Council is funding the relocation of an existing bus shelter and upgrading of a bus stop on the southern side of the C488 Cromer Road – this will also include a new pedestrian crossing point – which is expected to cost £10,000.

'We are currently in consultation with Holt and High Kelling parish councils regarding the precise location of the bus shelter. Norfolk County Council is currently awaiting confirmation from Holt Parish Council, as they will be responsible for the maintenance of the new shelter.

'The bus shelter relocation follows an investigation into a tragic death on the A148 Cromer Road in December last year, that concluded road safety improvements could be made on this stretch of road by removing the existing west bound bus stop opposite High Kelling Post Office and for buses to instead use the bus stop in the vicinity of the North Norfolk (Holt) Railway Station.

'The appropriate stakeholders and bus companies will be consulted in due course following the outcome of discussions with the two parish councils. Subject to the outcome of the consultation it is planned that the works will be conducted in Spring 2017.'
