This photograph shows how it all began for Fakenham Swimming Club, which now, 35 years after the picture was taken, faces an uncertain future.

The picture is of the launch of the club in May 1978 and will, no doubt, bring back fond memories for people who have been part of it.

Amongst those pictured is club founder and former chairman Heather Barrow, in the centre of the third row from the front wearing a dark top.

The EDP reported last week how Fakenham Academy plans to close its pool on July 23 next year.

Principal Matthew Parr-Burman said the pool costs more than £100,000 per year to run and brings in just £12,000 so the academy could no longer afford to run it.

It is estimated that between 200 and 250 people regularly use the pool including academy students, pupils from local primary schools and private groups, including Fakenham Swimming Club and Dereham Canoe Group.

Fakenham Swimming Club committee member Eric Mason, pictured right, attended that launch event and can be seen three rows from the front to the right side of the picture wearing glasses and a tracksuit top.

He said: 'This club has been a big part of my life for 35 years and it would be dreadful if it had to close.

'We will be looking at other pools in King's Lynn, Sheringham, Bodham and Wells but lots of people will be competing for water space.

'No decision will be made until we get comments together from all of the parents and hold a committee meeting in the new year. I don't know what will happen – this could force the club to fold.'

Mr Mason said he will try to contact Mrs Barrow, who he believes now lives in Wales.

He said: 'She was heavily involved in North Norfolk District Council and Fakenham Town Council and was a powerhouse for the club. As she set the club up she deserves to know what's happening.

'We're certainly not just going to sit back and let this all wash up over us.'
