A controversial proposal that reignited anger over plans to develop recreation land was dropped at a Wymondham Town Council meeting this week.

Wymondham residents turned out in force at the town's Fairland Hall on Tuesday after town councillor Colin Foulger's submitted a motion for a feasibility study to look into building new town council offices on Kings Head Meadow. However, the proposal was dropped after Mike Gibbins, who was due to second the motion, withdrew his support.

The meadow had been the subject of a long running campaign by action group Wymondham Asks Why (WAW) earlier this year to stop town council plans to sell the site to Asda for a new supermarket, which would have resulted in Wymondham Town Football Club relocating to Ketts Park.

WAW member Derek Ward accused Mr Foulger of showing contempt for the work of his colleagues Dianne Fernee, John Turner and Alison Taylor, the members of a working group set up in the aftermath of the Asda row to look into possible future uses of the meadow site, which is due to report its findings following a public consultation on September 8.

He said: 'I believe, Councillor Foulger, that you are determined to put something on that meadow. You lost the argument over the Asda deal and I believe that you are showing complete vindictiveness towards the councillors.'

However, Mr Foulger said the three working group councillors had presented some findings to the council's leisure and environment committee following consultations with 30 different groups in the town which suggested some support for using the meadow for town council offices.

He agreed the motion had been 'badly worded' and offered to remove the specific reference to developing Kings Head Meadow. He said the current council offices, which have been in a grade II listed building in Middleton Street since 1974, were no longer suitable and did not comply with disability rights legislation.
