Picking up a slippery bar of soap from the road and running with it to the finish line, bowling for a pottery pig and a three-armed race were among a wealth of traditional sports, fun and games at Edgefield's jubilee fete yesterday, Tuesday June 5.

Over 300 adults and children packed the village green and hall to join in events which aimed to replicate Edgefield's Silver Jubilee fete, in 1977, according to Dawn Hulbert, chairman of the organising committee of hall trustees and representatives from other village organisations which has been planning the fete since before Christmas.

Children manned stalls and other attractions included a tombola, raffles and cream teas. Members of Edgefield Ladies' Club ran a cake stall which raised 140 for the Sparks 4 Hearts appeal at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

A photo quiz featuring unusual views of Edgefield features proved popular and a film of the 1953 coronation of Queen Elizabeth II played throughout the event on a big screen in the hall.

A particularly popular part of the celebrations had been when children had let off Union Flag lanterns into the skies while singing the National Anthem, according to Mrs Hulbert.

The evening saw 140 people enjoy a hog roast and a choice of more than 200 puddings while listening to musical duo The Italian Job.

'It was all a great success,' said Mrs Hulbert. 'There was a lovely atmosphere on the green in the afternoon. The happiness was almost tangible.'

Any profits from the day will go towards village hall maintenance costs.
