Norwich's countdown to Christmas began in style as huge crowds turned out to see the first of the city's light switch-ons.

At Chapelfield last night, Fifi and Bumble from children's show Fifi and the Flowertots joined Santa and his elves to officially turn on the shopping centre's festive lights.

Families were treated to a special performance by Fifi and Bumble, and other highlights included donkey 'reindeer' rides for children and the chance to see real reindeer in their stable.

There was also craft activities, carol singers, balloon modellers and even a beatboxer.

Chapelfield Marketing Manager, Sheridan Smith, said: 'It's all about families at Christmas. I just saw some toddlers loving the show.'

Michelle Ray, from the Queen's Hills estate, Costessey, said: 'The atmosphere is great, we're here to see Santa.'

However her six year old daughter, Amy, said: 'We don't want to see Fifi or Santa, we're here to see the beatboxer.'

• Next Thursday The Mall Norwich's Christmas lights will be turned on by Poringland popstar Ronan Parke of Britain's Got Talent fame and soap star turned Dancing on Ice star Hayley Tammadon, who is playing Sleeping Beauty in this year's Norwich Theatre Royal pantomime.

Ronan will be performing at 6.30pm and turn on the lights at 7pm.
