A TASTE of the Olympics came to Halesworth last week as pupils prepared for the forthcoming Games with their own sports day.

Children at Edgar Sewter Primary School got into the Olympic spirit with their own opening ceremony, flags and torches, before showing off their sporting side with 11 different activities.

The children took on javelin, hurdles, running and Paralympic sports boccia and seated volleyball in a full day of sports. Other activities included football, tennis, long jump and rugby.

In the morning it was the turn of the school's key stage one pupils, and in the afternoon it was key stage two. Zoe Scotchmer, school PE co-ordinator, said: 'It all went very well. We always do two sports mornings for sports day, but this year we combined them into one day and had a picnic at lunch time.'

Mrs Scotchmer added that every four years they do an Olympics-themed sports day event, but this year was bigger than ever as they marked the forthcoming London games.

The morning started with the children sitting on the playground to spell out London 2012 and form the Olympic rings.

Each of the 206 children were also given a different nation's flag to create for the occasion.

Both morning and afternoon events included an opening ceremony, with a pupil and Mrs Scotchmer taking the Olympic pledge.

The key stage one children were split into four teams while key stage two represented their four houses.

At the end of the day, all were given a medal with a special podium also set up.
