Young musicians teamed up with professionals from the Royal Marines School of Music at the weekend for a special concert.

Twenty-six marines and three bandmasters from Portsmouth came to Diss for a weekend of rehearsals with the South Norfolk Youth Symphonic Band (SNYSB), which was followed by a concert at the Diss Corn Hall on Sunday night.

The partnership is the 15th year the Royal Marines have come to Norfolk to play with the youth band, which has members between the ages of eight and 23.

Mike Booty, musical director of the youth band and ex-Royal Marine, said: 'They get the opportunity to play alongside professional musicians and that is a tremendous benefit to them and it also helps the marines and bandmasters who are in training.'

The concert comes after SNYSB was saved from folding last year after their rehearsal venue at the Diss Youth Resource Base was kept open by Diss Town Council, despite county council cutbacks. The youth band is also looking forward to a two week trip to Malaysia later this year.
