The Walks to host street tournament on Saturday, June 25

There should be slam-dunks galore in King's Lynn as a street basketball tournament comes to town later this month.

Teams and individuals are being invited to showcase their skills in the sport, which has risen in popularity in the area since the introduction of a multi-use games area.

There will be a range of prizes for the best teams in a three-on-three tournament, or for individuals taking shots at the baskets.

'Basketball has become a really popular leisure activity for many residents. This tournament is an opportunity for them to show off their skills and maybe win some prizes,' said Adam Garford, West Norfolk Partnership Project Officer.

It is the second time the tournament has been held in The Walks and local enthusiast Deividas Navickis said he hoped the event would spark more enthusiasm for the sport, either for players or spectators.

'It is a fanstastic time to be holding a street basketball tournament as the equivalent to the World Cup, Eurobasket 2011, is just around the corner. There is a lot of interest in the sport which we hope will inspire people to enter our competition or just come to The Walks and see it for themselves,' he said.

There will be a host of other family activities on June 25, with rounders, Kwik Cricket and a beat-the-goalie competition against the Linnets' Alex Street.

Most of the activities are free, but there is a team entry fee for the basketball with 12-14s 10; 15=17 15 and over-18s 20.

Teams need to register before the event and can eith do it online at www.norfolkstreetball.co.uk or by calling Marie Connell on 01553 760568 or Mr Navickis on 0742 6323003.
