Peter Pan, Snow White, Alice in Wonderland and Mary Poppins - escorted by a company of roller-skating chimney sweeps - were among the familiar faces that took part in the cheery cavalcade.

Residents of all ages donned fancy dress for Sunday's procession, led by Winterton's 901 troop marine cadets TS Fearless, which wound its way through the centre of the village to the recreation field to mark the start of the popular fete.

Great Yarmouth Mayor Marlene Fairhead opened the fete with Janice Barr, president of Great Yarmouth Lions Club, and Lennie Gent, chairman of Hopton Parish Council.

Compere for the day was Buzby Allen from Potters Leisure Resort, who provided a non-stop commentary of the activities taking place while promoting the 50 stalls dotted around the field.

A record crowd was entertained by band displays, a performance by Potters' professional brother and sister act 'Salvatore and Margherita Albertini', youngsters from Charlotte Wood's School of Dance, the Mirage belly dancers and a polished performance from Phoenix Karate.

Youngsters also enjoyed fun and games with Razz the Clown and Auntil Pearl, while funfair rides swooped through the sunny skies and visitors enjoyed a look round the various stalls.

Among those setting up shop for the day was Great Yarmouth and Gorleston Macmillan Cancer Support, which raised more than £220 for the charity. Volunteers thanked supporters for their donations and organisers from the council and Lions Club for a 'magnificent and successful day'.

Stephen Ford, chairman of the fete committee, said the event had attracted the largest number of visitors it had ever had in its eight year history.

He added: 'A great day was had by all. We were blessed with good weather after a tremendous thunder storm the evening before which gave me a sleepless night.

'I would like to thank all those who participated, especially the team behind the scenes who made it all happen without them this would not have been possible.'
