It was a magical night – filled with tears, joy and jubilation.

The EDP Stars of Norfolk Awards did not fail to honour spectacularly the community heroes and heroines who make this county great.

Tonight more than 250 people filled St Andrew's Hall in Norwich to salute those champions who work selflessly and tirelessly for others.

Heart-warming tales of courage, strength, and spirit filled the night as one by one the Stars of Norfolk winners were announced and rewarded.

The 2014 awards are in partnership with Norfolk County Council, district councils, the EDP, its many sister titles across Norfolk and generous sponsors.

This year saw a record number nominated in categories ranging from volunteer and young person of the year, to unsung hero and armed services person.

The glittering ceremony was hosted by the BBC's David Whiteley and was described by EDP editor-in-chief Nigel Pickover said as showcasing Norfolk's 'very best'.

He said: He said: 'We are celebrating ordinary folk who do extraordinary things for the great county of Norfolk.

'Our community is so close, so magical, so kind, so giving, and that moves me a great deal.'

Dad of two Mark Thompson was crowned the Overall Star of Norfolk after being awarded the Outstanding Bravery of the Year Award.

Mr Thompson, 53, from Lakenham, saved the lives of a woman and a dog after a car burst into flames after a head-on crash with a lorry.

With his wife and two young boys on-board, Mr Thompson had a choice: To wait for the fire service or to do something incredibly brave.

He opted for the latter, grabbing the woman's arm and pulled her until she came free. She survived and the dog survived – and have Mr Thompson to thank for it.

As well as the 14 category awards, two surprise special recognition and a lifetime achievement award were also announced.

Don't forget to buy Monday's EDP for a 16-page souvenir special on the Stars of Norfolk Awards.
