Work on the dualling of the last single stretch of the A11 carriageway is still on course for completion by winter 2014, according to the Highways Agency, as latest overhead photographs show the extent of the work so far.

Photographer Mike Page has taken a number of photos which clearly show the removal of felled trees and branches and the stripping of top soil as part of the project to dual the 9.1 mile (14.6km) stretch of road between the Fiveways Roundabout and Thetford.

Highways Agency project manager Geoff Chatfield said: 'Work on the A11 Fiveways to Thetford dualling is progressing well and on schedule.

'Since January 24, when roads minister Stephen Hammond formally announced the start of construction on the scheme, we have continued to clear the construction site including removing felled trees and mulching branches. This means that the preparations we carried out during the advance works are now more visible from the A11.'

He said there had been recent night-time road closures to allow for the building work and access to and from the A11 at the B1112 had been closed for the building of an underpass.

The remainder of the B1112 from Eriswell to Icklingham will remain open for local access from the A1065 at Eriswell and the A1101 at Icklingham. A temporary 40mph speed restriction is in place along the B1112 for safety reasons.

The C616 has also been closed to prevent direct access onto the A11 and once the scheme has been completed, access onto the new dual carriageway will no longer be possible from the C616 for safety reasons.

Mr Chatfield added over the next month, topsoil would continue to be stripped in the vicinity of the war memorial where the Non Motorised User (NMU) underpass will be situated and there will be large scale excavation at the B1112 ahead of the new underpass being built.

A temporary 40mph speed limit will remain in place between the Fiveways roundabout and the Thetford roundabout for safety reasons.

The main works are estimated to cost between £94m and £114m.
