Illegal fishermen have been caught along a popular Norfolk waterway.

The Environment Agency led rod licence enforcement patrols along the River Bure as part of a crackdown on unlawful fishing.

Action was also taken at eight Essex fisheries.

Over three days, officers checked dozens of anglers through Operation Springfield II.

Some 224 rod licences were checked and out of that, 23 people did not have licences.

Environment Agency officers were joined by Essex and Norfolk police officers, the Broads Authority and Angling Trust volunteer bailiffs.

Lesley Robertson, Environment Agency enforcement team leader, said: 'Those who avoid buying a rod licence and found fishing illegally will be caught and may face prosecution and a hefty fine. Anglers should ensure they are properly licensed before going out to enjoy this worthwhile hobby.'
